Etching Fibres
Etching fused silica fibers can be done with
ammonium bifluoride. It's a "buffered" solution of
hydrofluoric acid - not nearly as nasty as HF. It comes
in crystals from Fisher Scientific. Just add water.
You can control the concentration to control the etching
rate. It should be done under a fume hood.
